Episode 516: Broadcast News (1987)

Broadcast News (1987)Watch the trailer!

The second film in our pairing about television news was written, produced, and directed by James L. Brooks (of "Terms of Endearment" fame)! In 1987's "Broadcast News," we meet out three leads as teenagers before leaping to the film's present-day. We meet Jane Craig (Holly Hunter), a woman who eats, breathes, and lives television. She works as a segment producer with her best friend, reporter Aaron Altman (Albert Brooks), who is equally as passionate about the integrity of news as an artform. Their world is thrown into chaos, however, when the network decides to hire a good-looking but mentally average correspondent and fill-in anchor named Tom Grunic (William Hurt), and he asks Jane for help becoming a better newsperson. The story has a number of twists the characters are forced to deal with, including a love triangle and something it has in common with last week's film: The result of major budget cuts forced on the news division by the parent network. The film also stars Robert Proskey, Joan Cusack, and Jack Nicholson! Plus, the gents reveal which two Kevin Smith films have become their second pairing to focus on the writer/director/star!
